Fighting Disease

Rotary International has been working to eradicate polio since 1985 when it launched its PolioPlus program.  At that time there were an estimated 350,000 cases of this crippling disease in over 200 countries. With its international membership and resources Rotary International organized and funded vaccination days and health initiatives resulting in continent by continent elimination of the disease. PolioPlus efforts have protected an estimated 20 million people, many of them children, from polio. Afghanistan and Pakistan alone remain sites of endemic polio in 2023.
 

Rotary’s overall financial contribution to the eradication effort is nearly $800 million. The Owego Club and its members make regular contributions to this program and recently two Club members travelled to Africa to participate in Immunization Days.

Youth

Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders. Owego Rotary is very proud of its strong programs that help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service. There are four major areas of focus for our club:

  • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
  • Interact Club
  • Scholarships

Environment

The Canawanna Nature Preserve has been the signature environmental project for the Owego Rotary Club since 2020, as the club celebrated its 100th anniversary. The preserve spans a six-acre plot of land at the confluence of the Susequehanna River and the Owego Creek. Follow our progress and learn more here!
