The Owego Rotary Club is one of 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries that make up Rotary International. Our club is made up of business and professional leaders from our local community who contribute their time and talents in service to the community and the world. The objectives of Rotary are to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Rotary Shares

The Rotary International President, John Kenny, in emphasizing his theme for the 2009-2010 Rotary year, tells Rotarians, "It is our daily actions, and our daily decisions, that determine the course of Rotary for us all. The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands." The emphasis for this year will be water, health and hunger, and literacy. Many parts of the world are still lacking in the availability of clean water. Polio is still infecting children in four countries. Hunger is a major world problem. The lack of literacy of millions of people in the US and countries around the world is impeding them from improving their lives. Rotary will continue to work these seemingly insurmountable problems with the hope that our efforts can make a difference in the lives of many.

John Kenny, from Linlithgow, Scotland, delivered his message to Rotarians at the 2009 International Assembly, which took place in January in San Diego, California, USA. The International Assembly is an annual training event for incoming RI district governors. His speech is on YouTube and can be viewed here. OBJECT OF ROTARY

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
  1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

  2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

  3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

  4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST

of the things we think, say or do:
  1. Is it the TRUTH?

  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
