The Rotary International President for 2011-2012 is Kalyan Banerjee from Vapi, India.

The Rotary International Theme this year is "Reach Within to Embrace Humanity." There will be three areas of emphasis in this year of Rotary service: family, continuity, and change. Our president says that the family and the home are the core of all our work as Rotarians, and our families extend into our communities and all of humanity. Continuity involves identifying the things we do well and take them to the next level, building on our successes. Our president tells us that true change begins with and within each of us.

Kalyan Banerjee delivered his message to Rotarians at the 2011 International Assembly, which took place in January in San Diego, California, USA. The International Assembly is an annual training event for incoming RI district governors. His speech is on YouTube and can be viewed by clicking here. Owego Rotary replaces book shelves in the lower level of Coburn Public Library
A District 7170 Simplified Grant provided the funding to purchase the shelves. Owego Rotarians gathered at the library on January 7th to assemble the shelves and put them into place, ready for books. Click here to see photos of the club in action.

Club member, Jack Sullivan, has been named District 7170 Rotarian of the Month for December
Jack Sullivan Jack Sullivan is a very active member of our club. During the aftermath of the 2011 flood, he spent countless hours surveying flood stricken homes, offering professional assistance, and coordinating volunteer work teams. In the past three years, Jack has organized Group Workcamps for Tioga Opportunities and has been the Site Coordinator for the young volunteers coming to the area to work on projects. Jack has been serving our Rotary District as the RYLA chairperson. Jack is on our club's Board of Directors and is the current president nominee, becoming the club's president for the 2013-2014 year. This recognition of "Service Above Self" is well deserved.

OBJECT OF ROTARY

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
  1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

  2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

  3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

  4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST

of the things we think, say or do:
  1. Is it the TRUTH?

  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
